The Story Behind The Company
No Negatives Required Inc. has been an incorporated photography business based out of Grande Prairie since 2018.
Owner Kyla Shaw originally from Lesser Slave Lake has had a passion for photography since she was a child. Photography became more enjoyable and something that was important to Kyla as she grew. In 2006 she welcome her first born child, a son and her passion was ignited even further. Kyla and her son were over the moon as they welcome a beautiful baby girl into the family May 15, 2008. Her heart was full and her life perfect…. or so she thought at the time.
Kyla’s daughter Kaidence was 20 days old when she was admitted to the hospital and immediately airlifted by STARS to the Stollery Children’s Hospital at the U of A Hospital in Edmonton. After 3 long days the family was informed Kaidence was diagnosed with a brain and spine infection. For 16 days Kaidence endured many different tests. Taking a turn for the worst day 17, her status worsened and the doctors had no choice, placing Kaidence on life support, however Kyla refused to give up hope. Kyla had taken every chance to capture photos along the way no matter how painful they might have been.
Tragically June 24, 2008 surrounded by family Kaidence was taken off life support and Kyla’s whole world shattered. At 20 years old she had lost her beautiful little girl and understandably spiraled into a deep, dark depression.
As the years went on she tried many times to channel such an immeasurable heartache into something she could live with. After a conversation with her Mom, many tears and more support than Kyla had felt in a while she was reminded of her passion and hobby. “She wouldn’t want to see you like this Kyla. You need to find something to help you through this, maybe do something in her memory” her Mom told her….. And with that a fire was lit.
With the help of her amazing Mom, Kyla went back to school to pursue photography. She attend night classes, pushing herself to be with her now two son’s during the day and channel her darkness into something positive. She wanted to be a photographer anyone could work with regardless of the situation. Help others through capturing memories. After the birth of her second daughter, Kyla was ready for the negatives to be over. She packed up her three beautiful children and moved to Grande Prairie for a fresh start and a new chapter.
Starting a new chapter and getting away from all negativity she sat and thought. With a digital photography world, negative film is not something really used anymore… no negative film, no more negatives from the past… she combine the two and No Negatives Required was born.
Kyla started her photography career to help others and do something beautiful to honor her angel Kaidence. To this day No Negatives Required Inc has grown into a beautiful photography and print studio, working with many different charities and foundations to help make a difference in the lives of others.
Every year on the anniversary of Kaidence’s passing Kyla offers a free hospital newborn session to a baby born this day as well as offering free services to parents and families who are about to or who have recently suffered this same heartache. After all when everything is over all we have are photographs and memories.
“I did it for you, I did it for me and as long as my blood flows I will do it for them” In loving memory of Kaidence Myra Christine Payne May 15 - June 24, 2008
